BARRIERS

Many present issues stem from past unjust treatment from colonization. Indigenous peoples today still face outstanding land claims, lack of resources and unequal funding for both education and housing.

Neo-colonialism still prevails; many Indigenous communities are unfairly treated by companies and the government. Current laws allow big companies to profit through the purchase and selling of reserves. In Attawapiskat (one of the poorest Indigenous communities), mine developments have left the land inhabitable for plans and animals, affecting the livelihood of the entire community.

Furthermore, despite the promises from the government and companies against exploitation, many Indigenous communities do not get their share of profits from developments, and instead are left with poisoned resources.

Barriers: About

“They are promising to share this time…Why would these promises be different from past promises? We will be left with nothing but poisoned water, land and air”
