CALLS TO ACTION
What needs to be done
Abandon current and pending legislation that infringes on both environmental protections and Aboriginal and Treaty rights. Changes to legislation such as the Indian Act and Navigable Act allow the government and businesses to execute projects without strict environmental assessments.
Proportional representation and consultation of legislation regarding collective rights and environmental protections. This especially includes legislation that restricts corporate interest.
Allow free, prior, and informed consent. Respect rights of Indigenous people to say no to development on their territory.
Affirm and recognize Aboriginal Title and Rights (section 35 of Canada’s constitution) which recommended by Royal Commission on Aboriginal People
Honor the Historic Treaties intent and spirit. Abandon the justification of seizure of Indigenous Nations land and wealth. One way is through officially reject racist doctrines (eg: Discovery and the Doctrine of Terra Nullius) that legally land as unoccupied or uninhabited.
